Purdue University Calumet In Brief


Purdue University Calumet espouses the spirit of the land grant university tradition and is especially dedicated to the service of the people of northwest Indiana within the charter given to Purdue University. Purdue Calumet's primary mission is threefold:

  • To provide its students with a liberal education that will prepare them for life and the professions;
  • To provide career-oriented curricula that leads to certificates, associate degrees, baccalaureate degrees and master's degrees;
  • To provide programs that meet the professional, cultural and general education needs of this urban-industrialized region.

  • …is located in Hammond, Ind.-within minutes of downtown Chicago and the shores of Lake Michigan. Classes also are offered at an off-campus Academic Learning Center 20+ miles southeast of campus in Merrillville, Ind.

All new students, transfer students from non-Purdue institutions and those students returning to Purdue Calumet after an absence of more than one semester are classified as new students. Once students earn a Purdue bachelor's degree and begin to work toward another degree the next semester, they are classified as new students.

Undergraduate and Graduate Student Service Fees include parking cost. The Technology and Lab Fees are the same for all students.

Outreach services, programs and facilities that address personal, cultural and general educational interests include:

  • Calumet Conference Center (conference operations, banquets & special events)
  • Couples and Family Therapy Center
  • Distance Education and Extended Learning Center
  • Fitness Center
  • Gerontology Center
  • Riley Child Center

Additionally, the Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana and the Napolean Hill World Learning Center are housed at the Calumet Conference Center.

The community also is invited to use the campus' library resources in the Student Union & Library, as well as attend the numerous lectures and assemblies, fine arts presentations, athletic contests and other events held on campus.

Economic Development

Outreach services, centers and institutes that Purdue Calumet has initiated or with which it partners to advance northwest Indiana and its economic development include:

  • Entrepreneurship Center (for current business owners)
  • Water Institute
  • Center for Energy Efficiency and Reliability
  • Center for Women and Minorities in Construction
  • Center for Science and Technology in Education
  • Purdue Technology Center of Northwest Indiana
  • Hammond Business Incubator

  • The Purdue University Calumet Information Center is open weekdays, evenings (Monday-Thursday) and Saturday mornings (September-May). It is located on the concourse of the Student Union & Library. Telephone: 219/989-2400.

  • Two 16-week semesters and 12 weeks of summer instruction-including a traditional 8-week session and shorter, more intense terms of study-are offered.
  • The fall semester begins in late August and continues through mid-December.
  • The spring term goes from mid-January through early May.
  • Summer instruction begins in mid-May and continues through early August.
