The Psychology Program
Psychology is one of the more popular undergraduate majors in the country. Why? It's because a knowledge of psychology helps people to understand themselves and others. Psychology, then, can prepare you for almost any career in which the ability to relate well with others is most important. The psychology program, offered by the Department of Behavioral Sciences at Purdue Calumet, offers a sound, theoretical base; a broad, liberal arts background; and practical experience with appropriate agencies.
Career Opportunities
Purdue Calumet bachelor's degree graduates in psychology have found employment opportunities in mental health clinics, social welfare agencies, government, education, business, and industry. A wider range of professional opportunities is available following graduate study leading to the master's and doctoral degrees.
Psychology Major
Degree Requirements (as of 2000)
The psychology major at Purdue Calumet can be used as preparation for graduate work. A flexible schedule of courses is offered so that you can pursue while attending to job and other responsibilities. The major is intended for those of you who desire to study psychology from a broad, general perspective. The flexibility of this option allows you to choose courses to meet your individual interests or career goals. Our interdisciplinary approach provides you with the background for understanding:
- human behavior
- psychological disorders
- complex nature of organizations
- basic research
- developmental issues as they relate to the continuity of life.
Minor in Psychology
A minor in psychology is available to students majoring in other disciplines.
The Faculty
Psychology Faculty
All permanent members of our psychology faculty hold doctoral degrees. They have expertise in clinical and counseling psychology, human sexuality, experimental psychology, statistics, community and environmental psychology, industrial psychology family therapy, psychological testing, gerontology, and the psychology of women.
Facilities
Our psychology laboratory and new computer classroom have been designed as Computer Assisted Student Learning (CASL) facilities. Both utilize a local area network (LAN), which permits you, as a student, to participate in real and simulated experiments and to analyze data you've collected from your own experiments. This innovative use of technology facilitates student learning and encourages participation in research projects.
Fieldwork Opportunities
As a psychology major at Purdue Calumet, you will have the opportunity to work for college credit in your chosen area of psychology. This closely supervised experience will help you see how well the theories you have learned in the classroom relate to real life. The practical work also will enable you to see if you will enjoy or feel comfortable with employment in that area and may increase your chances for such employment.
