Outstanding Alumni Award

Dr. David Radovich - General Dentistry, 509 Ridge Road Suite 4, Munster, IN 46321

Dr. David Radovich

Professional Achievements

Dr. David Radovich is a lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana. He graduated from St. Casimir grade school and Bishop Noll Institute. His family dentist made a strong impression on him and so he knew from an early age that he wanted to be a dentist himself. Purdue University Calumet was the perfect college for him. Located only a few miles from home, he was able to work part-time and save on expenses. Pursuing a four-year dental degree (DDS) in Indianapolis at the Indiana University School of Dentistry would be an expensive sacrifice for his family, but he knew that the quality of a Purdue undergraduate degree would be a plus when applying to dental school.

David met his wife Susan while she was in the dental hygiene program. He graduated dental school in 1979 and following their graduations, they got married and started practice together in Munster. Their son Marc attends Lake Central High School. David coached his son’s little league teams for many years and the family attends Westminster Presbyterian Church, where David have been active in the mission committee and other positions. He will soon become a member of the Munster Lions Club.

Dr. Radovich says, “What my Purdue Calumet experience means to me.”

“I would recommend Purdue Calumet to any student interested in a career in the medical field. I attended classes with pre-med, pre-dent, and med-tech students. We studied, worked hard, and helped each other without competition. The professors and the administration kept us on track to complete our degrees on time and provided us with encouragement when needed. I especially remember professors who were instrumental in supporting me. They include biology instructors Jerry Wermuth, Jane Shoup, Ken Wilson, and Terry Dougherty. Chemistry instructors included Alan Carlson and Mr. Fry.

I am grateful to all the mentors in my life. I feel that the knowledge and encouragement given to me were crucial to success in my profession and in life. Over the years I have shared my dental experience with boy and girl scouts, Eagle scouts, high school, college and dental school students. I have been rewarded many times when young dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants have returned to my office to tell me that I was a part of their success. I encourage any student at Purdue Calumet, or any student you know who has an interest in a dental career, to contact me.”

Professional Achievements

Dr. Mansky is an internationally recognized expert in the study of HIV genetic variation and evolution. As a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Howard Temin (Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine, 1975), Dr. Mansky determined the in vivo mutation rate of HIV and found that it is one of the most rapidly evolving viruses in the world - which is key to HIV’s ability to quickly evolve drug resistance and frustrate attempts to create an  effective preventative or prophylactic vaccine. As a faculty member, Dr. Mansky and his research team have pioneered studies of the determinants of HIV evolution and have applied these findings in the discovery and development of novel antiviral approaches to the treatment of HIV infection. Dr. Mansky has given over 40 invited lectures, published over 50 peer-reviewed articles, and has been awarded over 4.5 million dollars of research funding.

Dr. Mansky has been honored by numerous awards, including the American Society for Microbiology President’s Fellowship, the American Cancer Society’s Heroes of Hope Award, as well as a National Institutes of Health Career Development Award. He regularly acts as a reviewer for journals including the Journal of Virology, Virology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci., and currently serves on the editorial board of Retrovirology. He is a presently a regular member of the NIH AIDS Molecular and Cell Biology (AMCB) Study Section.

Dr. Mansky has served as Director for the Institute for Molecular Virology at the University of Minnesota since 2003. This Institute has over 50 investigators who are conducting virus research towards or at the molecular level, which is the location where virus research and related investigations intersect one another. A central goal of the Institute is to encourage interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaborations that could lead to new discoveries and, ultimately, more potent diagnostics and therapies. Dr. Mansky says, “What my Purdue Calumet experience means to me”

Purdue has a national and international reputation of excellence in science and engineering that I believe helps inspire students in these areas to achieve success in their chosen career paths. My experience at Purdue laid the foundation for my striving for excellence in my area of research expertise, molecular virology. I remain indebted to the Purdue faculty who shared their knowledge and enthusiasm for science with me during my time as an undergraduate student. As I advise and mentor the postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. students and undergraduate students in my research group and at my university, I seek to inspire them as well to achieve excellence in research and scholarship.

Professional Achievements

Dr. Elwess’ has succeeded on multiple levels and in varied arenas.  She has authored numerous publications in national and international scientific and science education journals, and has presented her research at a variety of national science conferences.

In addition, Dr. Elwess has been awarded a number of honors and awards.  She was the recipient of the National Association of Biology Teachers 2005 College Professor of the Year Award for Teaching and Research.  She received the Alumni Achievement Award (2005) from the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Vermont.  In 2004, Dr. Elwess received the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.  This award is one of the highest awards within the State University of New York system (32 campuses serving ~500,000 students).   Finally, Dr. Elwess has established a record of service.   She is presently a member on the Board of Directors for both Eastern Illinois University and the Mayo Clinic.  She also serves as an advisor on undergraduate research for LI-COR Biosciences and on a personal note, she has completed 100 marathons, including 23 consecutive Boston marathons and 9 Ironman triathlons.

Dr Elwess says, “What my Purdue Calumet experience means to me”

"I had a wonderful experience at Purdue, but it wasn’t until after I had graduated that I truly realized just how rewarding and valuable an experience it was. Purdue not only gave me a quality education but it provided opportunities that I never envisioned when I first entered their program.  What impressed me the most was the complete package it delivered from the lectures, inquiry based learning experiences, research and mentoring.  To this day I still feel comfortable calling my former mentor at Purdue and asking for his advice."
