The Annual Purdue University Calumet 2008 Outstanding Student Recognition Reception was hosted in Founder’s Study on February 17th and eight students were introduced as Outstanding Students in Biological Sciences by Department Head, Dr. Mike Henson and awarded certificates of achievement by Chancellor, Dr. Howard Cohen. The Department of Biological Sciences is justifiably proud of the following awardees: Charles Capek SME (Medical Technology) - A top student in Prof. Tseng's Genetics and Medical Genetics courses. He wrote an outstanding term paper for Medical Genetics suggesting an innovative treatment of Leber Hereditary Optic Neurotrophy, a mitochondrial gene mutation that leads to blindness. Bradley Clark SPM (Pre-Medicine option) - He is a highly organized and responsible mentor for the BIOL Freshman Experience course and is a productive research associate with Dr. Ernest Talarico at IUN Medical School. Bryan Gaynor SPP (Pre-Pharmacy option) - He was at the top of Prof. Tseng's Genetics course in fall 2007 and is an outstanding supplemental student instructor for Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II. Sarah Parrish SBA (Biotechnology option) - An LSAMP award recipient in the fall of 2007. Her paper with Dr. Charles Tseng on "The subcloning of the hepatitis B small surface antigen gene: a new technique in DNA vaccine development" was presented at IU Bloomington. Daniel Pop SPM (Pre-Medicine option) - He participates with Prof. Sarac in research involving the mutagenesis of potassium channel subunits in cell membranes and is co-recipient of a PUC Undergraduate Research Award for the 2008 spring semester. Aliciavidal Ruiz SPM (Pre-Medicine option) - A fall 2007 LSAMP research award recipient. Her genomics paper on "new technique for bacterial source tracking" with Professor Tseng was presented at the 2007 IU Bloomington research conference. Lori Simmons-Stalter SBA (Biotechnology option) - A gifted learner and a highly motivated student teacher, she has performed as an outstanding supplemental instructor in BIOL 213, Human Anatomy and Physiology I. Kyle Van Winkle SBY (Biology) - An exceptionally motivated student who was tops in Dr. Sarac’s Animal Physiology course during the fall 2007 semester. He has an exceptionally strong commitment to learning.
