Biology student featured in PUC Academic Digest
Sandie Zlotorzynski (junior Biological Sciences major) appeared on the cover and was featured in the Spring 2008 edition of The Purdue University Calumet Academic Digest in its article on Experiential Learning at the University.
The article reveals how Sandie has reaped the benefits of Experiential Learning. During the summer following her freshman year, she interned with the United State Geological Survey, where she monitored avian survivorship and productivity at the Indiana Dunes. “I’ve always been interested in wildlife biology and ecology, and that internship solidified that I was doing the right thing,” says Sandie.
In addition to her internship experience, Sandie conducts independent research on the effects of reproduction on the lifespan of Burying Beetles under the supervision of her Biology department mentor, Dr. Curt Creighton http://www.calumet.purdue.edu/biology/faculty/creighton.html
Sandie goes on to say, “I feel like I’m at such an advantage in an independent research atmosphere. I get to learn how to get things done on my own. Before, I was just interested in getting my assignment done and getting a good grade. Now I understand why I’m doing this in the lab and how I’m going to use it in the real world.”
Dr. Mike Henson, Professor and Biology Department Head, is pleased to add, “Sandie is a great example of how cutting edge, faculty directed research and Experiential Learning directly touches the lives of Biology students at PUC. We’re proud of them all!”
