Bachelor of Science degree

The objective of the Bachelor of Science degree program in Construction Management & Engineering Technologies (CMET)is to broaden the background of the associate degree graduate in the areas of construction project management, construction engineering, construction methods, inspection, supervision, scheduling and management with additional emphasis on business and communication. The intent of the bachelor of science program is to prepare students to take advantage of opportunities in management positions in which direction of personnel, as well as construction projects, is required.

This program does not lead to professional registration in architecture or engineering.

Sometimes it seems that the vacant land you drove past yesterday is the new home of a gated subdivision or a shopping center today.

Chances are graduates of Construction Management and Engineering Technologies programs were responsible for the change in the landscape. The Construction Management & Engineering Technologies (CMET) program provides knowledge of construction project management, construction engineering, construction methods, inspection, supervision, scheduling and management with additional emphasis on business and communication. The program prepares students to take advantage of opportunities in management positions in which direction of personnel, as well as construction projects, is required.

Courses in the CMET program includes topics such as project control and development, site planning, design, construction methods, construction materials, value analysis, cost estimating, scheduling, contract administration, accounting, business and financial management, building codes and standards, inspection procedures, engineering and architectural sciences, mathematics, statistics, and information technology.

Career options with a bachelor degree in Construction Management & Engineering Technologies

Graduates can pursue careers as construction managers for specialty trade contractors - plumbing, heating and air-conditioning, and electrical contractors, general building contractors, engineering, architectural, construction management services firms, local governments, educational institutions, and real estate developers.

Advancement opportunities as a construction manager vary depending on your performance and the size and type of your company. Within large firms, you may move into upper-level management or executive positions. Highly experienced individuals may become independent consultants or may establish their own construction management services, specialty contracting, or general contracting firm.

Certificate programs in construction management and residential construction provide leverage for advancement for those working in the labor-intensive side of the construction business. With the knowledge gained from these certificate programs, a carpenter, millwright, plumber, electrician or mason may find more opportunity for management positions.

Graduation Requirements

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a new graduation requirement for students who will be starting Purdue University Calumet in Fall 2008. This is a new approach to teaching; students go beyond theory based learning and explore ways to gain practical knowledge within their program of study. Students will enroll in two experiential learning courses while completing their degree. Experiential learning is offered through undergraduate research, internships, service learning, cooperative education, cultural immersion/study aboard, design project or practicum. Your academic advisor will assist you in selecting an experience that is right for you.
