Degree Requirements

The Department of Construction Management & Engineering Technologies also offers a Surveying Technology Option. This option is granted upon successful completion of the Associate Degree Program in Civil Engineering Technology and the Bachelor Degree Program in Construction Technology, which has been modified for this option. The option includes 10 courses in land surveying (totaling 31 credit hours), 4 courses in mathematics (totaling 13 credit hours), and 3 courses in science (totaling 12 credit hours). This option has been designated as an “Approved Program” by the state of Indiana Board of Registration for Land Surveyors. The option also has been approved by the Land Surveying Licensing Board of the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation as satisfying the statutory requirements of a baccalaureate degree in a related science which includes 24 semester hours of land surveying courses.

Why choose a bachelor degree in Construction Management & Engineering Technologies, Surveying option

Sometimes it seems that the vacant land you drove past yesterday is the new home of a gated subdivision or a shopping center today.

Chances are graduates of Construction Management and Engineering Technologies programs were responsible for the change in the landscape. The Construction Management & Engineering Technologies (CMET) program provides knowledge of construction project management, construction engineering, construction methods, inspection, supervision, scheduling and management with additional emphasis on business and communication. The program prepares students to take advantage of opportunities in management positions in which direction of personnel, as well as construction projects, is required.

Courses in the CMET program includes topics such as project control and development, site planning, design, construction methods, construction materials, value analysis, cost estimating, scheduling, contract administration, accounting, business and financial management, building codes and standards, inspection procedures, engineering and architectural sciences, mathematics, statistics, and information technology

Career options with a bachelor degree in Construction Management & Engineering Technologies, Surveying option

Graduates of the Surveying program are qualified for positions as survey technicians and surveyors.  Prospects for advancement are excellent.  Graduates with strong technical skills, management abilities and a desire for increased responsibility can attain supervisory positions.  The growth of technologies, such as GPS, GIS and remote sensing, will continue to increase productivity and accuracy in the field.  In addition to land surveyors and technicians, there are other types of surveyors including cartographers who gather survey information to create maps and geodetic, geophysical prospecting surveyors and hydrographic surveyors.

Graduation Requirements

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a new graduation requirement for students who will be starting Purdue University Calumet in Fall 2008. This is a new approach to teaching; students go beyond theory based learning and explore ways to gain practical knowledge within their program of study. Students will enroll in two experiential learning courses while completing their degree. Experiential learning is offered through undergraduate research, internships, service learning, cooperative education, cultural immersion/study aboard, design project or practicum. Your academic advisor will assist you in selecting an experience that is right for you.
