Students pursuing an Associate of Science or a Bachelor of Science degree program in Management must successfully complete the Pre-Management curriculum (with a grade of C or better in each of the courses) before taking upper-level courses (300 level or higher) in Management, Economics or Organizational Behavior.

The School of Management at Purdue University Calumet offers an undergraduate program leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Management with a major in the field of Finance. The objective of the Finance major is to provide a specialized knowledge of the Finance discipline.

Finance, as a discipline, consists of four interrelated sub-areas: Financial Markets and Institutions; Investments focuses; Corporate Finance; and Personal Finance.

The Finance major is designed for students who are interested in the stewardship of the financial resources of individuals, corporations, or financial institutions. As future managers, students learn the principles and applications of financial analysis, management, and strategy. The program aims to equip students with the theoretical understanding and practical skills necessary to evaluate and direct decisions regarding the allocation of financial resources among a variety of competing opportunities with the goal of maximizing the value of the resources being managed.

Career options with a bachelor degree in Management, Finance option

A number of exciting career opportunities await in the finance profession. Corporations hire financial analysts to prepare and review the company's business plans and annual budgets, analyze various capital expenditure proposals, raise long-term financing and manage a firm's working capital.

Securities analysts are hired by investment bankers, brokerage firms, trust departments of commercial banks, insurance companies, pension plans and other financial institutions.

Commercial banks and savings institutions hire banking officers to maintain and expand existing relationships with clients and develop new client relationships. Also, numerous job opportunities exist in the rapidly growing financial services industry.

Graduation Requirements

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a new graduation requirement for students who will be starting Purdue University Calumet in Fall 2008. This is a new approach to teaching; students go beyond theory based learning and explore ways to gain practical knowledge within their program of study. Students will enroll in two experiential learning courses while completing their degree. Experiential learning is offered through undergraduate research, internships, service learning, cooperative education, cultural immersion/study aboard, design project or practicum. Your academic advisor will assist you in selecting an experience that is right for you.

Admission to Purdue University Calumet is based on demonstrated academic quality rank factors, which includes a high school diploma or GED, meeting subject matter requirements, grade average in degree-related subjects, as well as overall grade average, trends in achievement, class rank, SAT or ACT test scores and the strength of the college preparatory program.
