Human Resource deals with managing people in work environments, including acquiring, developing, and retaining satisfied and productive employees. In organizations employees are viewed as essential resources needed if organizations are to operate efficiently and effectively. Firms increasingly rely on the expertise of trained Human Resources professionals to help them develop and utilize people - their most valuable resources.

As a Human Resources student, you will take courses in management and related business fields. Human Resources classes integrate the basics of human resource management and organizational leadership, occupational safety and health, supervision, labor/management relations, personnel law and conflict resolution.

Career options with a bachelor degreee in Organizational Leadership & Supervision, Human Resources & Personnel option

Personnel and Human Resources graduates are qualified to work in training and development, strategic staffing, labor and employment law, managing organizational change, compensation and benefits, leadership and team building. You will graduate with the necessary knowledge to carry out roles such as recruitment, selection and placement of employees; training employees in the context of their career development plans; developing and supporting performance appraisal systems; managing labor relations; managing compensation and benefit programs; and implementing personnel policies and procedures.

In addition to recruitment and staff agencies, most businesses retain their own internal departments to handle all aspects of human resources management.

Graduation Requirements

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a new graduation requirement for students who will be starting Purdue University Calumet in Fall 2008. This is a new approach to teaching; students go beyond theory based learning and explore ways to gain practical knowledge within their program of study. Students will enroll in two experiential learning courses while completing their degree. Experiential learning is offered through undergraduate research, internships, service learning, cooperative education, cultural immersion/study aboard, design project or practicum. Your academic advisor will assist you in selecting an experience that is right for you.
