Larry A. Brechner

Education

Biography

Larry has a unique combination of professional and educational theatrical experience, and has worked on hundreds of productions as lighting designer with a variety of theater companies, receiving The Times Reggie Best Lighting Award twice an the 1997 the NW Indiana Excellence in Theatre Foundation Best Lighting Award. He is also widely recognized for his work as a director, particularly of musical theater productions, because of his sensitive and intuitive directing style.

Currently, Larry is the Director for the 1000-seat School Town of Munster Auditorium (an administrative level position), plus is the Producer/Director of the Munster Theatre Company. As the Theatre Administrator for The Center for Visual and Performing Arts, and as the Production Manager/Resident Lighting Designer for The Center's resident professional Equity theater, Larry help make to move from a semi-professional to a full professional theater operation. Prior to that he was the Auditorium Director for 13 years at Highland's Monbeck Auditorium, founding the Auditorium Staff, plus the Highland Theatre Company as its Producer/Director. He is pleased to return to fresh challenges found in educational theater in Munster and has already built a strong theater program there.

Larry is proud to have received both his Bachelor and Master's degrees from Purdue University Calumet in Telecommunications Production and Management. Purdue honored him in 1997 with the prestigious Distinguished Corporate/Community Service Award. He is currently completing work on his Doctor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Studies.

Outside of the theater, Larry is a voting member for the Grammy Awards since 1980, and has attended the ceremonies in Los Angeles several times. He serves on the Board of Directors for several community organizations, and can regularly seen as a on-air pledge host for WYIN-TV. In 1999, Larry received the Distinguished Leadership Award from the National Association for Community Leadership at the annual national conference.

Other Information

In his spare time Larry is a recognized photographic artist with several gallery exhibits to his credit. His subjects include scenic, lighthouses, still life, figure studies, old buildings including a retrospective of his own theater career in a exhibit at The Center's Atrium Gallery One Gypsy's Trek Through Regional Theatre. He is a licensed instrument rated commercial pilot, and Extra Class amateur radio operator (WB9FQS).

He is married to Carol Lynn, who shares in his theater and photography endeavors, and is proud dad to Lauren and Jamie (plus grandpa to Carlie and Brooke).
