DOWNLOADED PROGRAMS
This section deals with programs that
are voluntarily
downloaded, as opposed to being secretly installed onto your
computer (see Spyware).
Whenever you wish to install any software on any of the computers
here on campus, you should ALWAYS check with CTIS first. That way,
if there are any problems, they will at least be forewarned.
Buyer beware -
even if free!
 |
With all of the software
applications available for anyone to download, a little common
sense must be exercised, lest you
install something onto your computer that could harm it. First
of all, only download and buy from sources that have been
proven reputable. |
 |
Make sure you research the software
you want before you download it. If you are on campus and need
the program NOW,
ask the CSSC to get a hold of hardware to get their opinion.
Yes, this will take a little bit of time, but having to have
your
computer re-imaged takes a lot longer and is far costlier in
terms of data and productivity lost. |
Safe sites to get
software
 |
Knowing where to get software can
be just as important as what you want to download. With all of
the places available online
to download programs from, how do you know which sites are
reputable and safe? Fortunately, there are sites out there on
the Web that specialize in providing downloads in a safe
environment (spyware and virus free), and have ways of
determining whether the software you are getting is quality
or junk. |
 |
In general, you can trust the
software you get from any of the following sources. However,
there will always be exceptions.
-
Any big name, reputable
software company (Symantec, Apple, Microsoft) - Most, if not
all of the software they provide is safe for downloading.
However, in certain cases (like Windows updates), you will
want to hold off on downloading and let CTIS take care of
downloading and installing for you.
-
Majorgeeks.com and
Download.com - Make sure you read the reviews and
understand their
rating systems before you
download anything from here. In general, the software they
offer is safe to use, but a lot of it comes with no
guarantees or
warranties (offered as-is), so anything that happens to your
computer as a result of running programs from here.
|
On the other hand, big-name software
companies also allow their software to be downloaded from these
sites (known as mirroring).
If Majorgeeks.com and Download.com were anything less than
reputable, they wouldn't be allowed to do that.
Overall, due to the user review systems these 2 sites have set
up, you can be pretty certain the software you find there, will work
well for you whether you use it at work or home.
Store bought
software
Just as an honorable mention, most of the time when people buy
software, they get it from a local store. As a rule, you should
carefully monitor what else is getting installed with the
programs you purchase (lest you get the latest version of AOL
dial-up Internet service installed with your CD-burning software,
for example).
