   TIPS FOR FACULTY & STAFF

Security for faculty and staff can be summed up in 4 categories: Tips for securing a computer, Tips for securing a desk/office, Telephone safety tips, and Internet/Email safety tips. Internet/Email safety tips can be found in their own separate topics at Mail Protection.
By following these suggestions, you can greatly increase your level of protection from identity theft and general computer and security issues.

Tips for securing a computer

bullet

Lock workstation when you leave. WindowKey+L will lock the workstation. Also, hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del and hitting enter will also
lock it.

bullet

Set a time of 5 minutes or less for your screensaver and have it password protect upon resuming.

bullet

If your workstation is in an area that is publicly accessible, TURN IT OFF when you are done using it.
This serves two purposes: first, it keeps people on campus out of your files and system. Second, it prevents anything from being run that might try to open up your system to the Internet (which the computers are always hooked up to when on here on campus).

Tips for securing a desk/office

bullet

Don't leave papers with sensitive data out.

bullet

Keep all drawers and cabinets locked. Do not keep any sensitive materials in drawers or cabinets that can not lock.

bullet

Never write your password down. Under the keyboard or on the back of the monitor is not a safe place to keep your password
on a sticky-note. Use passwords that are difficult, but that have meaning to you. (see the Passwords page for more information).

Telephone safety tips

bullet

Never give out sensitive information over the telephone. CTIS, or any other department at PUC, will never ask you for your
password over the phone. Be alert for anyone asking for this information on the telephone.

bullet

Be aware that anyone may be listening in when you are talking on the phone. Try to avoid talking about topics you wish to be
private on the telephone.

Social Security Number tips

bullet

Never give out your Social Security Number unless you know EXACTLY who you are giving it to and what they are going to use it for.
