SAFE
SURFING
What is safe
surfing
Safe surfing is a set of practices and routines that you can
follow that can help you to maintain an acceptable level of security
while online.
How to practice
safe surfing
Below is a list of things you can do,
or avoid doing, that will greatly increase the level of security you
experience while being online:
 |
AVOID VISITING/USING THESE TYPES OF SITES!! - They could
infect your computer with viruses and/or spyware, or
compromise your identity and privacy.
Adult themed
At the very least, these types of sites will put
tracking cookies in your computer. At the worst, they
will put viruses
and spyware in that can be impossible to safely remove.
Gambling/gaming
As with Adult-themed sites, these sites will put
anything from cookies to spyware and viruses in your
computer
when visited.
Religious
Surprisingly, a lot of viruses can be "caught" by your
computer at sites pertaining to religions. This is due
to people
hacking into the web servers for religions they don't
like, or creating sites claiming to be about a religion
but are
instead looking to dupe people and take control of or
mess up their computers.
Unknown online
dating/singles services
By now, we've all seen advertisements for on-line dating
and match-up sites. Some of these sites can be quite
adult-oriented, and thus carry the same risks as
adult-themed sites. Further, if the "dating service" is
an unknown
or fly-by-night setup, it can actually be a spoof set up
to gather your personal information.
Chat rooms/Social
networking sites
Many people like to engage in discussions with people
about similar interests. The Internet has allowed people
from
all over the world to do that quickly and easily. The
drawback of that is that the people looking to infect
your computer
or steal your information have also moved into that
realm, and will often try to get the people there to do
risky things
that they normally wouldn't do otherwise.
As an example of what is happening, check out *
this article on MySpace spyware* at MSNBC.

Try to avoid being redirected
- Being redirected may take you to unsavory sites that will
install viruses and/or spyware. Disabling Javascript will help a
lot in avoiding this, but it can also hinder your online
experience.
|
 |
Block Pop-ups - Aside from
being annoying, pop-ups may install adware/spyware. For more on
some of the dangers of pop-ups, check out this article at
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/06_29/b3993001.htm.
|
 |
Avoid falling for spoofing -
Spoofing is the falsifying of the Internet address you are going
to (fake eBay and PayPal sites
are good examples of these). People who set up spoofed sites do
so for the sole intention of stealing and using your personal
information and identity.
|
 |
Beware when blogging -
beware giving out too much personal information, as this could
lead to people finding out more about
you than you might want them to know.
|
 |
Beware when I.M.ing - as
with blogging and chatrooms above, plus beware links posted by
others
|
 |
Use well-known Web browsers
- Use only safe, well known browsers (IE, Mozilla, Netscape,
Opera). In addition, look for the security features they offer
to their users, generally found under Tools and Options.
|
 |
Be careful when using online
shopping sites/eBay - Even the most legitimate of sites can
sell your personal information to other companies (they are in
the business of making money, after all). Make sure, at the very
least, you read the privacy statement for the site you wish to
do business on to see what they do with the information they
gather from you.
