TIPS
FOR STUDENTS
Tips for main lab
usage
 |
Never leave the computer when you
are logged in. Always remember to log off before you get up from
a computer. You can lock the workstation if you are just
leaving for a moment. |
 |
Never leave a flash/thumb drive
unattended. As they will work in just about any computer, they
are hot items for theft. As they are small and easy to
conceal, they are very easily stolen. |
 |
If you leave your computer logged
in and leave the lab, anyone can resume activity on the computer
as you, and any activities
will appear to have been done as you, and you will be held
responsible for it. Thus, it is important to log out of the
computers when you are done. |
University
village security practices
 |
Open email attachments only if you
are expecting them from people you know. |
 |
Always use strong
passwords, and keep them secret.
|
 |
Never click on links in an email,
even if they are from someone you know. Type the address in your
browser window instead. |
 |
Never check your Purdue email account on a "free" or
"public" Internet kiosk or Internet Cafe.
|
 |
Lock your keyboard when you step away from your computer for
even a moment. A quick stroll down the hall is plenty of
time for someone to slip in and read your information. Or
worse. To lock your Windows computer, press and hold the
Windows logo key and press 'L'. |
 |
Keep your door closed and locked at all times. Also be sure
to keep your valuables in your room when you or your friends
cannot watch them. |
 |
Never store sensitive personal information such as your bank
account information or Social Security numbers on your
computer. |
 |
Do not open files sent to you in
Instant Messaging (IM) or peer-to-peer (P2P) programs without
virus scanning them. NEVER open unsolicited files sent to you.
|
 |
Do not set your computer to
automatically log in. |
 |
Be careful of people posing as
delivery personnel, as there is the possibility of identity
theft stemming from someone signing for a delivery for someone
impersonating a delivery person. Always ask to see a company
issued photo I.D. from ANYONE who asks you to sign for a
delivery. |
Tips for laptop
usage on campus
 |
Be careful to never leave your
laptop unprotected. If you have to leave the laptop, set a
screen saver with a password, so no one
is able to view the contents of the laptop while you are away
from it. |
 |
Set a time of 5 minutes or less for
your screensaver and have it password protect upon resuming. |

Practices to be
performed regularly
 |
Run a complete scan of your computer using both McAfee and
your chosen anti-spyware software. |
 |
Check your browser history.
- In your browser, click the history button or press
ctrl+h.
- Examine the last few entries. If they are not sites
you've visited, an investigation needs to explain how
and why these sites
were accessed.
|
 |
Change your password every 30 days and make sure you use
well-formed, secure passwords. Visit the
password
page for help creating a password that is difficult to
guess, yet easy to remember. |
