Purdue University Calumet Graduate School of Education Survey

This survey is designed to assess the needs of teachers in northwest Indiana seeking a master's degree. We are replacing our current elementary and secondary master's programs with a degree that meets accreditation standards and better meets the needs of the educators and the students they serve. Due to accreditation issues, we are no longer able to offer the traditional subject-based degrees.

Memo to students
(both those already enrolled and those who wish to enroll)
in our general elementary and secondary master’s degree programs

As anyone in education knows, programs change as societal conditions change.  Our general elementary and secondary master’s degree programs have been in operation for decades based on Indiana state rules and requirements.  However, as of 2002, these state rules and requirements have dramatically changed.  These changes have forced us to reexamine our general degree programs.  The result is that we have decided to phase out our elementary and secondary general degree programs.  In their place, we will develop new degree programs which will better serve today’s educational needs and better fulfill new state rules and requirements.  For example, there is a powerful need today for teacher leaders, that is, teachers with national board training who can help school districts develop curriculum and who can provide professional development in order to meet AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) goals.  This is one area of interest we are considering for new elementary and secondary programs.  There will be others as well.  Therefore, the following changes will occur:

  1. As of March 1, 2007, we will accept NO more applications for any of our elementary or secondary general master’s degree programs.
  1. Any student who has submitted an application by that date, whether post-bac or degree-seeking, will be admitted to the desired program.
  1. Any student already in one of the programs, whether as post-bac or degree-seeking, will be allowed to continue and finish the program.
  1. During the next 2-3 years, we will be developing new elementary and secondary degree programs, at  least one of which we hope to have operational by Spring 2009.

It is difficult to part with programs with which we have all become comfortable, but it has always been our goal at PUC to provide students with the best and most useful programs of which we are capable.  We realize it is time to move on and we hope you will all be patient with us while we redesign.  In return, we will do our best to make the transition positive and painless.  If you have questions, please contact either Dr. Tom Mihail (for elementary – 989-2690) or Dr. Mary Didelot (for secondary – 989-2059).
