M.A. students who do not write a thesis must take a
final, comprehensive examination to demonstrate their qualifications for the
degree. This exam is given two times a year, in April and in November,
and is based on a standardized reading list of
various works in literature and theory. During your graduate coursework, you will encounter
many of these works, but
all students will need to read and prepare some on their own.
Students may opt either
to take a two-hour oral or four-hour written version of this exam. If a
student fails the exam, he or she must wait until the next time the exam is
offered, and take the other form of the test (oral or written). Any student
who fails the exam twice will not be awarded an M.A. degree.
