Welcome to the Graduate Program in English
Graduate study in English can deepen your understanding of
the experience, context, institution and theories of the reading and teaching of
literature and writing. The graduate program serves teachers in local high
schools and community colleges interested in developing their knowledge of
English, individuals who want to prepare themselves to pursue a Ph.D. at another
university, as well as those who simply enjoy the challenge of advanced study in
literature and writing.
Anyone with a bachelor’s degree in any field can take graduate
classes at Purdue Calumet. Have a look at the
list of upcoming classes, or join the Graduate Program’s email
list to receive announcements of upcoming classes, events, and
important deadlines.
The Department of English offers a variety of graduate
courses leading to an M.A. degree in English. Program requirements are flexible,
allowing students to tailor their degree to match their interests. Requiring 33
credits (11 classes), the program is designed so that the full-time student
should be able to complete it within two years.
In addition to coursework, an M.A. degree requires students
either to take a comprehensive examination or write a
thesis. The Quick Click
listing to the left contains links to detailed information about the thesis and
exam, including a listing of recent theses and the exam reading list.
Joining the program is easier than you might think. Many students support themselves while pursuing an M.A. degree by
teaching writing within the English department. |
