Engineering Graduate Program

Admission

A student who wishes to enter a program leading to the degree of Master of Science in Engineering, Master of Science, or Master of Science in a particular engineering field must apply for regular admission and must hold a baccalaureate degree in engineering or a closely related area. A student without a baccalaureate degree in engineering may be considered if the equivalent of studies required for a baccalaureate at Purdue has been completed.

Students having a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an EAC/ABET (Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited institution will work toward the Master of Science in Engineering degree.

Students with a Bachelor of Science in fields other than engineering or with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from a non-EAC/ABET accredited institution may only work toward the Master of Science degree, unless granted special permission by the CCEE to work toward a Master of Science in Engineering degree. A student with a Bachelor of Science in a particular engineering field - e.g., Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering - from an EAC/ABET accredited institution may elect to work toward the degree of Master of Science in that particular field - e.g., Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering - if accepted for that degree program by the particular Purdue West Lafayette engineering school which grants the degree.

Unconditional Admission:

The student's undergraduate grade point average must meet or exceed 3.0 (B equivalent) on a 4.0 scale.

Conditional Admission:

An applicant with an undergraduate grade point average less than 3.0/4.0 may be granted conditional admission.

Require GPA of 3.0/4.0 or better for the first 12 credits of graduate work

In some cases an applicant may be advised or required to complete prerequisites or additional courses to fill deficiencies in academic background.

Temporary (Post-Baccalaureate) Studies:

  • All qualified engineering students are welcome to take engineering courses for career development or to work toward a degree.
  • Application forms for admission as a temporary (post-baccalaureate) registrant are available from the Graduate Office of Purdue Calumet. Completed forms should be returned to that office.

Precaution: Admission as a temporary (post-baccalaureate) student does not in any way imply that later admission will be granted for regular status to work towards a degree. It is not admission on trial in lieu of conditional admission because of scholastic deficiencies. A student expecting to work toward a degree in the engineering graduate program should use this admission procedure only to avoid delay in starting the program. The student should submit a separate application for regular admission during the first session of graduate study. Not more than 12 semester hours of courses (with grade of B or better) taken as a post-baccalaureate registrant may be applied to an advanced degree, and then only if approved by the student's advisory committee. This 12-credit limit includes all pre-admission course work, whether taken through Purdue Calumet or other schools.

Transfer of Credit into the Graduate Program:

Graduate credit from other institutions and graduate level credit earned while an undergraduate (at Purdue or other accredited institution of higher learning) in excess of any degree requirements are transferable provided the courses are graduate level, were not used to complete the requirements of any other degree program, and are accepted by the student's advisory committee. A maximum of 12 hours may be transferred; i.e., the plan must include a minimum of 18 hours of Purdue course work completed after regular admission. Each transfer course must have a grade of B or better and must satisfy a course requirement on the plan of study.
