PUC, ETIE send student off to study at Harvard University

International Beat Complete

Zhuo Zhang is completing the ETIE this may and transferring to Harvard University where he will pursue a Master of Science degree in Engineering Sciences beginning next fall. Mr. Zhang came to us from the Beijing Institute of Technology in China to start English training in Engineering under Chenn Qian Zhou for the 2008 fall session.

After studying in the U.S. for eight months, Zhuo still feels very new, although he has learned a lot, especially at PUC. After taking courses at PUC he feels that he is more able to solve practical problems in his daily life. He has also learned a great deal from his (American) roommates. They have helped him to improve his English skills and taught him more about American culture, creating a strong friendship.

Many might be nervous when applying for Harvard but this was not the case with Zhuo. Because he applied at several graduate schools, he felt comfortable that one school would admit him. Indeed many schools did accept him including Harvard University, Columbia University, CMU, U Mich-Ann Arbor, and UT-Austin. Zhuo found that the application process is basically the same at many schools with some additional details required in some areas.

A high GPA, TOEFL and GRE score helped when applying to Harvard but Zhuo's life experiences are even more important. He feels that his experiences over the past year are really what helped him get into Harvard. And, although he is not sure of his future plans, his determination and focus are sure to lead him to a successful path.
