GENERAL EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT
A university education comprises both professional and general components. General education is that part of the academic program that assists the student’s development as a person and citizen, and complements the student’s professional education. The goals of the general education program at Purdue University Calumet are fourfold: (1) To develop and enhance basic academic skills; (2) to provide important general knowledge; (3) to develop the critical skills needed in assessing the ethical, aesthetic, and practical consequences of actions; (4) to integrate these skills and areas of knowledge so as to promote life-long learning.
The basic skills component of the general education program consists of achieving competence in communication and problem solving. Communication includes writing, reading, speaking, and listening. Mastery of these skills gives the individual a voice in society and the critical sense to understand others. Problem solving centers on the use of abstract reasoning and involves calculating, analyzing, synthesizing, and critical thinking. Mastering these skills enables the individual to address effectively the complexities experienced within the natural and social worlds.
The knowledge component of the general education program involves the organization of essential information about nature and human societies, including modes of inquiry and historical development. Such a body of knowledge broadens students’ perspectives of the world and themselves. It gives them an awareness and understanding of new thoughts and diverse views, as well as preparing them to recognize and adapt to change.
Developing students’ critical appreciation of the ethical, aesthetic, and practical dimensions of possible actions helps them promote constructive policies both publicly and professionally. This component helps students understand and appreciate the value of the individual within a culturally varied world, where an appreciation of human diversity is needed in navigating the complex social currents of our time. This general education component also helps students understand and appreciate the role of technology in social change, enabling them to respond to technology in enlightened ways. Such critical skills are strengthened in application by a knowledge of how health and well-being are achieved, helping students to identify and practice beneficial lifestyles.
Beyond the specific skills developed and knowledge gained, it is hoped that Purdue Calumet graduates will carry with them an appreciation for life-long learning. Such an appreciation insures the continued intellectual growth necessary for rewarding and effective living.
