RE: Outstanding Teach, Scholar and Service Award Nominations

Nominations are now being received for this year's Outstanding Teacher, Scholar and Service Awards. Following the guidelines approved in November, 1999 by the Purdue University Calumet Faculty Senate, a nomination, not more than 2 pages in length, should include:

1) name of the nominee, rank and departmental affiliation,

2) statement of nominator indicating why the nominee warrants the award and

3) information relative to the specific requirements for the particular award (see attached Procedure Guidelines).

By March 3, 2008, please submit one copy of nominations to:

Each award category has a specific purpose and eligibility requirements. Please review the attached guidelines, one for each specific category.

All nominations and supporting documents must include the nominator's name, address and telephone number. Nominations are due on or before March 3, 2008.

After the solicitation period, each candidate will be officially notified of his or her nomination and the names of all nominees will be published. Candidates will also be provided guidelines for submitting a nomination package with sufficient evidence of the candidate's qualifications to the Outstanding Teacher, Scholar or Service Award Committees.

PROCEDURE FOR SELECTION OF THE OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD RECIPIENT

I.      Purpose of the Outstanding Teacher Award

The purpose of the award is to honor outstanding teaching performance by the faculty at Purdue University Calumet (as defined in Article I of Purdue Calumet's Constitution).

An outstanding teacher is one who demonstrates superior ability in helping the students meet course objectives, stimulates their desire to master course objectives, and who exhibits competence in his/her discipline. The teacher will also recognize that his/her teaching responsibility to students does not stop at the class room door and, therefore, will be ready to aid and motivate them in a counseling and advisory capacity, either formally or informally.


II.    Overview of the Selection Process

The following steps outline the selection process. Each step is described in greater detail in subsequent sections.

A.    The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall solicit nominations in November of each year from students, alumni, faculty and administrators.

B.    By November 1st  the University shall establish the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee comprised of one representative from each of the four schools.

C.    The nominee shall be responsible for a nomination package that provides sufficient evidence of the candidate's abilities. The nomination package shall be submitted to the Chair of the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee by March 1st.

D.    The University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee shall publicize the list of nominees for the purpose of requesting input from students, colleagues, and alumni.

E.     The University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee shall make the selection of the award winner and notify the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. 

F.     The Chancellor shall present the award at an announced faculty convocation.

III.   Procedure for Making Nominations

The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall begin soliciting nominations for the awards from the University community in November of each year. Nominations for the award may be made by students, alumni, colleagues, or by faculty members themselves, subject only to the restrictions listed in Section IV. The nominee shall be responsible for submitting the nomination package to the Chair of the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee by March 1st.  The Committee shall then ascertain the eligibility of each nominee for the award. The Committee shall publish the names of eligible nominees in order to solicit additional support for the nominees from the University community.


IV.   Outstanding Teacher Awards Eligibility Requirements

A.    The nominees must have had a teaching FTE of at least 0.50 at Purdue University Calumet for the academic year prior to nomination.

B.    The teaching FTE for the year in which the person is nominated must equal at least 0.50.

C.    The nominee must be willing to have his/her name placed in nomination.

D.    The nominee must not have won a University Outstanding Teacher Award during the four years preceding the nomination. Nominators should feel free to resubmit previous nominations.

V.    Nomination Package

The nomination package shall consist of a brief of not more than two pages prepared by each nominee with appropriate appendices attached.

A.    Structure of the Two-Page Brief

1.     Name of the nominee, rank and departmental affiliation

2.     List of all courses taught during the academic year prior to nomination, as well as the fall semester of the current academic year, if applicable. With dates and numbers of students enrolled; e.g., MA 153 - SP 89, 150 enrolled.

3.     Statement of nominator indicating why the nominee warrants the award.

4.     Information relevant to the instructional effectiveness of the nominee.

5.     If a previous winner of the award (who has become re-eligible) is nominated, growth in effectiveness beyond that for which the award has already been given should be the focus of the nominee’s brief.

B.    Appendices

It is recommended that the following material from three years, including the fall semester, if applicable, of the current academic year, be appended to the brief:

1.     Results of all student evaluations of instructional effectiveness for all classes taught during this period. Evaluation materials from a maximum of three years may be submitted. Any material submitted in this category MUST include the written statement of the nominee that evaluations were conducted without his/her presence or influence.

2.     Not more than four documents of support from at least two of the following:

        a. outside evaluators

        b. students and/or alumni

        c. faculty

        d. administrators

VI.   Composition and Function of the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee

 

A.    Composition

1.     The Dean of each of the four schools, with input from the school’s faculty, shall nominate one representative to the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee.  The representative shall be ineligible for the Outstanding Teacher Award as long as she or he is a member of the committee.  The school’s representative will serve a two-year term and may be re-appointed.

2.     The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (or designee) shall be a member without vote.

B.    Function

1.     The Chair of the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee shall establish an initial meeting date for this committee.

2.     The Committee shall accept nomination packets from nominators and evaluate the eligibility of each nominee. The Committee shall announce the names of eligible nominees in order to solicit additional support for the nominees from the University Community.

3.     The committee shall evaluate the nominees.

4.     The committee shall draft a short statement indicating the area(s) of outstanding teaching for which the recipient is selected.

5      The name of the award winner and the basis for the selection shall be forwarded to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

6.     Committee evaluations of nominees shall be kept confidential.

7.     The committee shall choose the representative that will serve as the committee’s chair for the following academic year and will notify the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of its choice.

C.    Initial organization of the Committee

1.     The Dean of each of the four schools, with input from the school’s faculty, shall nominate one representative to the University Outstanding Teacher Award Selection Committee.  By November 1st  the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall be notified of each school’s representative.   The representative shall be ineligible for the Outstanding Teacher Award as long as she or he is a member of the committee. 

2.     The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs shall appoint one of the representatives to serve as the committee’s chair.

3.     The representative nominated from each of the following two schools shall initially serve a one-year term: the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the School of Technology.  The representative nominated from each of the following two schools shall initially serve a two-year term: the School of Engineering, Mathematics and Sciences and the School of Professional Programs.

4.     The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (or designee) shall be a member without vote.

VII.  Presentation of Award

The Chancellor shall make the presentation of the award at an announced faculty convocation.

VIII. Implementation

This procedure for selecting recipient of the Outstanding Teacher Award shall go into effect for the 1999-2000 academic year.

An outstanding scholar is one who demonstrates superior achievement in creative endeavor or in the development of new knowledge in his/her discipline or in scholarly or creative work that demonstrably affects students.

2.     It is recommended that materials similar to the following be appended to the brief.

        a.   Refereed articles accepted for publication in journals.

        b.   Refereed papers and/or presentations at professional or instructional conferences.

        c.   Grants and funded research.

        d.   Books which contribute to the literature and body of knowledge in the discipline. 

        e.   Serving as editor of a journal.

        f.    Edited books.

        g.   Serving as editorial consultant or as a referee for submissions/abstracts for publication.

        h.   Serving on an editorial advisory board or an editorial board.

        i.    Invited lectures and workshops and conferences at other institutions.

        j.    Publications in proceedings of conference presentations

        k.   Published reviews of books, scholarly works and textbooks, especially if such reviews are published in journals.

        l.    Software published, patented, or sold to clients.

        m.  Patents and copyrights.

        n.   Invited chapters written for books.

        o.   Non-refereed articles in publications related to the faculty member's area of professional or teaching expertise

              and invited articles for publication in trade magazines.  

        p.   Involvement in graduate and undergraduate student research with the goal of publishing that research.

q.   Paid and non-paid consulting experiences that are relevant to the faculty member's area of professional expertise.

        r.    Awards for scholarly achievement.

        s.   Other relevant examples of creative and/or scholarly activity.

VI.   Composition and Function of the University Outstanding Scholar Selection Award Committee

Outstanding faculty service includes those activities that directly support department, school, university and professional needs and which are beyond the requirements of their position.  Professional service includes belonging to an organization and especially serving as an officer.  Likewise, community service involves volunteer service on boards of directors or agencies or direct service to clients.  Outreach typically involves extending the influence of the University through continuing education, off-campus courses, consulting, etc.

II.    Overview of the Selection Process

        d.   Leadership in academic and other university affairs, advising student organizations, clubs for departmental majors, etc.

        e.   Participation in activities to promote the involvement of women and minorities in the University.

        f.    Participation on committees which promote intercampus cooperation.

        g.   Service as a committee chairperson, committee member, or officer of a professional organization at the local, state or national level.

        h.   Membership, attendance and leadership at professional meetings.

        i.    Consultation to educational institutions outside of Purdue University Calumet.

        j.    Participation in accreditation committees or visits.

        k.   Activities that implement or support the land grant service concept of the university in such areas as community development, extension teaching, off-campus courses, and other types of field services.

        l.    Meaningful and professionally relevant consulting activities with business, government and industry.

        m.  Participating in local, regional and state economic development activities.

        n.   Service as members and/or officers of boards of directors of community service agencies.

        o.   Participation on committees which promote inter-institutional cooperation.

        p.   Participation in professional and educational reviews.

        q.   Conducting continuing education programs on or off campus.

        r.    Training and workshops for staff or board members of community service agencies.

        s.   Other relevant examples of service and contributions.
