Programs

Bachelor of Arts, French or Spanish

The foreign language major is designed to advance linguistic knowledge and to foster an understanding of culture and literature. This major provides a good foundation for graduate studies.

  • International Studies Option

    The International Studies option includes a practical range of studies from other disciplines. This major prepares the student for the application of language skills in a career setting.

  • Teaching Option

    The teaching major is designed to meet certification requirements of the State of Indiana. Language courses are combined with professional education requirements for middle school, junior high, and senior high school teaching.

Minor in French or Spanish

The foreign language minor is designed for students wanting to complement a major in another area.

Associate of Arts, French or Spanish

The Associate of Arts degree in Humanities is a 63-credit degree that includes 15 credits in French or Spanish. The language concentration may include beginning or advanced level courses.

Certificate in Spanish Translation

The Certificate in Spanish Translation is suitable for individuals who have employment needs for Spanish translation. The seven courses required for this certificate could also count towards a bachelor degree in Spanish.

Other Languages and Courses

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers a variety of introductory level language courses and special purpose courses for various foreign languages.



Bachelor of Arts Programs in Foreign Languages
Requirements for all Bachelor's degrees in Foreign Languages:

1. Communication
ENGL 103 Adv. Freshman Comp.
OR
ENGL 104/105 English Comp. I & II

COM 114 Fundamentals Speech Comm.
2. Foreign Language
Twelve-hour sequence: French or Spanish 101-102-201-202.

3. Science and Mathematics
Three credits in a lab science. Three credits in mathematics or statistics. Six additional credits in math, science, computer science, statistics, or logic.

4. Humanities and Social Sciences
One course each from:
Literature
Philosophy (not Logic)
History
Aesthetics
Economics
Political Science
Psychology 120
Sociology 100 or Anthropology


Bachelor of Arts, French or Spanish (126 credits)
School and University Requirements for the Bachelor's degree plus:

1. All of the following courses in the Major Language:
261 Composition
365 Conversation
465 Intermediate Conversation
2. Major Language
Eighteen credits in courses numbered 400 or higher

3. Second Foreign Language (6 credits)

4. Minor

5. Electives

1. General Requirements for the degree. (27-30 credits)

2. Basic Concentration (15 credits)
101-102-201-202 plus courses beyond 202 to equal 15 credits of coursework all in one language (Note: Departmental credit does not apply.)

OR

Advanced Concentration (15 credits)
Any group of courses beyond 202 to equal 15 credits of coursework all in one language (Note: Departmental credit does not apply.)



Certificate in Spanish Translation
Certificate Requirements:

1. Placement at, or completion of, courses through the SPAN 202 level.

2. Completion of the following five courses:
SPAN 261 Spanish Composition
(Prerequisite: SPAN 202)

SPAN 373 Spanish Translation
SPAN 461 Intermediate Spanish Composition
SPAN 473 Intermediate Spanish Translation
SPAN 490A Spanish Grammar
3. Two courses in reading/writing Spanish or English to be selected with advisor's approval.
