Standards of Conduct for HTM Students in a Practicum, Field Experience, Public Service, Internship or Off-campus classes
This Policy was approved by the HTM Program Faculty on April 24, 1999 and was implemented during the Summer semester of 2000. It was revised Spring and Fall, 2003.
Purpose:
To establish the Standards of Conduct to be fulfilled by all Hospitality & Tourism Management students when enrolled in Practicum (HTM 301, FM 300, FM 305), Field Experience (HTM 390 O), Public Service (HTM 291 and 492), Internship (HTM 302) or off-campus (FM 115) courses.
Rationale:
In recognition of the fact that students in professional development, field experience, public service (on or off-campus) courses represent Purdue University Calumet and the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program, this Code of Conduct will ensure that students are aware of their responsibilities to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, at all times.
Students Standards of Conduct
- Students will follow all policies and procedures of the practicum, field experience, internship, or off-campus course professional sites, as well as the University policies for on-campus classes.
- Students will conduct themselves in a professional (career oriented) manner at all times.
- Students will maintain confidentiality regarding information accessed on any patients, clients, members, customers or employees associated with the professional sites.
- Students will be punctual in reporting for the professional experience (on or off-campus) and will adequately notify the site and instructor about any absence.
- Students will use appropriate written and oral expression in all interactions with preceptors, managers, supervisors, employees, the public and clients while at the on or off-campus sites.
- Students will participate in any orientation or testing required by the professional site. Additionally, students shall observe all established safety and sanitation codes. Students shall complete all pre-experience classes with a passing grade (major course "C" or above).
- Students will not engage in any unethical (doing what is wrong) or illegal practices while at the professional site (on or off-campus).
- The student accepts responsibility and accountability for their decisions and actions taken when at the professional site (on or off-campus).
- The student shall in all interactions treat guests, patients, clients, members, customers, the public and fellow employees equally and with dignity, regardless of race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin, disability or status as a disabled Vietnam-era veteran.
- Students shall maintain their role of "student in training" at all times during the term of the off-campus professional experience or on-campus class. As "student in training", they shall always take direction from instructors, professionals and managers both on and off-campus.
