Values of Integrity & the Honor Code

Integrity lies at the heart of all fine colleges and universities, such as Purdue University Calumet. As faculty, students, staff, and administrators, we are a community of dedicated learners, scholars, professionals, and practitioners contributing talents to the enrichment of Purdue’s human resources. As members of such a community, our responsibilities and obligations toward the advancement of learning, discovery, and engagement in the University and in Indiana extend also to our nation and to the world.

At Purdue Calumet, integrity is our greatest human asset, for we are obliged personally and professionally to act with honesty and adhere to the highest standards of moral and ethical behavior. Thus, we demonstrate understanding of ethical values and principles by our actions and decisions. Such behavior yields trust and trustworthiness, as we build and maintain a culture based upon ethical conduct. In such a climate, our actions are consistent with our words, and our words are consistent with our intentions. In accepting such responsibilities, we share leadership in a democratic spirit, subject ourselves to the highest standards of public trust, and hold ourselves fully accountable for our words and our actions.

Our commitment to integrity includes championing freedom of expression; safeguarding academic freedom, open inquiry, and debate in the best interests of education, enrichment, and our personal and professional development; respecting human and intellectual diversity and inclusiveness; upholding the highest standards of fairness; and insisting upon good citizenship, with its respect for equality, the rights of others, and the rejection of any and all discrimination not based on the quality of performance and accomplishment.

The dimensions of integrity vary from one constituency to another. In fulfilling our goals as a learning community, we place the objective of student learning above any self-interest. We treat all students equitably, and our evaluations of academic performance are impartial. In fulfilling our goals as students, we understand that learning is the most important achievement and we embrace the values of honesty and integrity in all our learning endeavors. In the realm of new discoveries, we place the highest value upon truth and accuracy, we acknowledge the contributions of others, as collaborations in discovery, learning, and engagement become stronger and richer, and we place a higher priority on knowledge than on recognition or ownership.

Moreover, to fulfill our goals as a land-grant institution, Purdue demonstrates responsiveness and provides access to all our constituencies, nurtures relationships with other partners in education who support our vision and/or join us to foster common interests, and integrates our mission with our responsibilities. We, therefore, contribute our knowledge resources impartially in serving our public purpose.

Working diligently and drawing from the strong work ethic of our State of Indiana, we are committed always to acting in the best interests of the University. We pledge to make wise use of resources and to be good stewards of financial, capital, and human resources. We operate within both the letter and spirit of the law and prescribed policies, striving to avoid even the appearance of impropriety or conflict of interest.

As members of the Purdue University Calumet community, we, therefore, pledge unyielding integrity in support of the highest standards of excellence for the University, so that Purdue University Calumet may achieve its vision of preeminence. As individuals, we all contribute to and share in the Purdue University Calumet standard of integrity as an exemplary model of university culture.
