Environmental Scan and SWOT Analysis
Environmental Scan
· Speed, ease of access, printer upgrades have led faculty to prefer
fulltext electronic
· “Aggregations” of journals don’t
always meet needs
· Customer driven services
· Differing needs for lab manuals, updated annually
Strengths
· New computers
· Access to databases
· E-books
· Electronic journals
· Library Web site
· Information management of Nursing (a model?)
· Library role in potential contributions to:
New faculty orientation Student Success Center
Weaknesses
· Data computing access
· Clogged pipeline – seamless service isn’t a reality
· CTIS
responsiveness
· Insufficient fulltext (if available at all and also what we are
able to afford)
· Differential access for individuals vs. institutions
in license agreements
· Sometimes slow turnaround with ILL
· Sciences allotment isn’t adequate for lab manual update
priorities
Opportunities
· Instruction + faculty integrated within Library (selectively)
· Contributing to information literacy at undergraduate & graduate
levels in Nursing
· Discussion with units in advance about resources needed
· Integration of Library in Blackboard courses
· Portal development
· Student orientation program – freshman orientation mandatory
Threats
· Staffing levels
· Getting students to make use of Library
· Curricular change + its impact on Library resources
· The Library is overlooked in planning
· Unintentional curricular change—faculty don’t require
papers due to ease plagiarism
· Pricing models + licensing agreements
· Budget inflationary price increases
