Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University Calumet is to serve Northwest Indiana by:

  • Providing quality undergraduate education,
  • Providing quality graduate education,
  • Being responsive to the educational needs of engineering students,
  • Being a technical resource for local industry and communities, and
  • Advancing the state-of-the-art in the application of science and technology to engineering.

Program Educational Objectives

The Mechanical Engineering curriculum provides a broad education in the fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering.  Students may pursue a general program or may choose a specialization in areas such as Thermal and Fluid Sciences, solid Mechanics, or Mechatronics.

The educational objectives of this program are to provide each graduate with:

  • Engineering Competence - Graduates are competent and engaged professionals in their field
  • Continuous Learning - Graduates continue developing professionally
  • Professional Skills - Graduates demonstrate teamwork and leadership skills and are contributors in their profession
  • Societal Awareness - Graduates recognize the societal, ethical, and global impacts of their work

Program Outcomes

Mechanical Engineering programs must demonstrate that their graduates have:

Outcome a: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering.

Outcome b: An ability to design and conduct experiments, and as well as to analyze and interpret data.

Outcome c: An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.

Outcome d: An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.

Outcome e: An ability to identify, formulate and solve.

Outcome f: An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.

Outcome g: An ability to communicate effectively.

Outcome h: The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global/societal context.

Outcome i: recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.

Outcome j: knowledge of contemporary issues.

Outcome k: An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Outcome l: An ability to apply their engineering knowledge to solve industrial problems.
