Purdue Calumet opens its doors to students displaced by Hurricane Katrina

Purdue University Calumet announced today (9/2) that it will avail itself to students displaced from universities and colleges due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

"We will do everything we can to assist and enroll students whose post-secondary education has been interrupted this fall by the devastating effects of the hurricane," Purdue Calumet Chancellor Howard Cohen said.

While Purdue Calumet offices are closed this weekend until Tuesday (9/6) in observance of the Labor Day holiday, hurricane-affected students who wish to pursue enrollment options at Purdue Calumet are invited to send an e-mail message, briefly outlining their circumstances to: register@calumet.purdue.edu. The message should include a contact phone number or e-mail address.

When university offices reopen Tuesday (9/6) at 7:30 a.m., interested students should phone 219/989-2213 or 800/HI-PURDUE, extension 2213.

"We will promptly access and follow up on all messages that we receive this weekend," Purdue Calumet Assistant Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management Anne Agosto-Severa said. "During the aftermath of this catastrophic event and in the spirit of collegiality, we at Purdue Calumet want to do whatever is possible to assist dislocated students."

Agosto-Severa added that Purdue Calumet, which began fall classes Aug. 29, will admit and enroll hurricane-affected students through Sept. 13. "Beyond that date, we will be more than two weeks into our semester, making it a hardship for new students to catch up," she said.

Late this week, Purdue Calumet enrollment services officials were in contact with three displaced northwest Indiana area students enrolled at hurricane-affected universities.
