NEWS RELEASE:
PUC hosts emerging technologies community briefing (1/16)
The Purdue University Calumet Water Institute will host a community briefing, Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m., to report on the progress of its collaborative project with Argonne National Laboratory to explore emerging technologies and approaches to minimize discharges into Lake Michigan.
The briefing, which is open to the public, will be held in Room 134 of the university’s Calumet Conference Center.
At the request last summer of U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky (D-Ind.) and supported by several Illinois congressional colleagues, scientists from the Purdue Calumet Water Institute and Argonne agreed to explore emerging technologies and other long-term sustainable practices for minimizing industrial pollutant discharges from wastewater into Lake Michigan.
Triggering the request was a commitment by energy company BP to study ways for reducing ammonia and total suspended solid discharges from its $3.8 billion expansion and modernization plans at its Whiting refinery. BP provided a contract to the Purdue Calumet Water Institute to collaborate with Argonne on the emerging technologies project.
At the briefing, Water Institute and Argonne scientists will share their research process and report on their progress.
It is anticipated that findings ultimately will prove helpful to other Great Lakes industries planning expansion/developmental initiatives.
Due to limited seating, individuals who desire to attend should pre-register by Jan. 14 by e-mailing laterneau@calumet.purdue.edu, or by phoning 219/989-2925 or 800/HI-PURDUE, ext. 2925.
