NEWS RELEASE:
PUC receives “Best Practices” award for supervisory training program
A Purdue University Calumet training program for supervisors has received a best practices award.
The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) presented Purdue Calumet Chancellor Howard Cohen and members of the University’s Human Resources staff with its 2008 Midwest CUPA-HR “Successful Best Practices” Award Monday (3/17) at the Midwest CUPA-HR regional conference in Chicago.
The award recognizes Purdue Calumet’s Supervise for Success program. The program helps enable staff supervisors and faculty to understand better their responsibilities and how to apply their leadership roles effectively.
“This award reinforces Purdue Calumet’s continuous efforts to be one of the best places to work in Indiana,” Purdue Calumet Assistant Vice Chancellor for Human Resources Mary Beth Rincon said. “More than a top notch training program, the award recognizes an environment in which supervisors value their employees, resulting in exceptional service for students and other clients.”
The program consists of a series of nine, two-hour core competency modules designed to enhance supervisory knowledge, skills and behavior in such topical areas as leadership; laws, legal issues and policies; communication, managing performance, building relationships, understanding conflict, and hiring talented individuals. After attending each module, supervisors must score at least 80 percent on an on-line follow-up exam.
The CUPA-HR Award Committee cited “Supervise for Success” for providing supervisors with consistent and systematic training to understand their leadership role and responsibilities and for being aligned with a Purdue Calumet strategic plan goal to support faculty and staff excellence. Also recognized was Purdue Calumet Associate Director of Staff Training Colleen Robison for her role as program facilitator.
The Award Committee is submitting the program for National CUPA-HR Award consideration.
