Author, professor to discuss slavery, economics, higher education Wednesday (5/7)

An author, urban historian and Dartmouth College professor will discuss the relationship of slavery, economics and the development of universities in the North during the 19th century, Wednesday (5/7) at 7 p.m. in Room 103 of Purdue University Calumet’s Gyte Building.

Craig S. Wilder will lecture on the topic, “Cotton Comes to Harvard: Slavery and the American College.”

Recipient of Columbia University’s 2004 University Medal of Excellence, he has conducted research most recently on the history of segregation in New York City schools and the historical evolution of the ghetto. For more than a decade he has worked with public school teachers in low income areas of New York City on curricular and professional development.

He also has written two books: “In the Company of Black Men: The African Influence on African American Culture in New York City” and “A Covenant with Color: Race and Social Power in Brooklyn”.

Purdue Calumet’s Dept. of History and Political Science is sponsoring this free event.
