NEWS RELEASE:
Open house workshop for parents, low income students who want to go to college is 11/19
Low income, middle school and high school students from urban Lake County school systems can find out if they are eligible to participate in a postsecondary educational opportunity program during an open house workshop, Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Purdue University Calumet.
Students and their parents are invited to attend the workshop from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall of Purdue Calumet’s Student Union & Library. Those interested in attending should pre-register by Nov. 14 by phoning Purdue Calumet’s Educational Talent Search Office at 219/989-2460 or 800/HI-PURDUE, ext. 2460.
Education Talent Search is a federally funded program that helps enable qualified, low income, first generation students (the first in their families to attend college) to continue their education beyond high school.
“Through this workshop, we hope to make students and their parents aware of how a post-secondary education , whether at Purdue Calumet or other colleges and universities, is attainable for these young people,” Purdue Calumet Educational Talent Search Program Director Melvyn Harding said.
The workshop is open to the public and will include a keynote speaker, panel discussion, breakout informational sessions and a resource fair designed to inform participants about how Educational Talent Search can help prospective students. Light refreshments will be served.
Purdue Calumet’s Educational Talent Search Program provides services and assistance to some 700 post-secondary students residing in Lake County’s northern core.
The program partners with local schools, teachers, school counselors, various community agencies, parents and existing support system peers.
