NEWS RELEASE:

Spending spring break performing community service

In an effort to help build stronger communities, Purdue University Calumet is offering students an outreach alternative to spring break next March.

Purdue Calumet is sponsoring “Spring Break-thru,” a community service program designed to enrich local, regional and national communities.

Students can choose to volunteer their services, March 16-20, at one of three sites: Haven House, a shelter for victims of domestic abuse in Hammond; Chief Richardville Site, a two-story, structure historical landmark in Fort Wayne; or Generation One, a non-denominational ministry committed to the spiritual growth and physical rebuilding of impoverished areas in Houston, Tex.

Service activities include maintenance and restoration work at both Indiana locations and community clean-up efforts in Houston. Individuals traveling to Fort Wayne and Houston will be provided transportation and housing. Costs will be subsidized by donations.

“At Purdue Calumet, we hope to develop quality alternative break programs that inspire lifelong commitment to the community and active citizenship,” Purdue Calumet Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Melinda Dalgarn said. “It is our expectation that participants will become better educated about social issues and, therefore, be empowered to make more informed decisions as contributing members of their communities and society.”

Additional information may be obtained by contacting Purdue Calumet’s Office of Student Affairs at 219/989-2367 or 800/HI-PURDUE, ext. 2367.
