She succeeds by implementing web-based technologies on campus
In the fast-paced, constantly changing field of computer technology and information services, Purdue Calumet Director of User Services Elizabeth Osika strives to make faculty, staff and students more comfortable with technology.
"If people feel more comfortable, they'll be more open to change," Osika said.
Osika, 34, who received her master's of science from PUC in 1997 began her corporate career in human resources, but said she quickly carved a niche for herself as a technology trainer and specialist.
In July 1998 Osika joined PUC's faculty as the coordinator of the Faculty Instructional Technology Lab. Doug Sharp, assistant vice chancellor for information instructional technologies, said Osika has been involved with and responsible for leading the implementation of many of the web-based course management systems, such as Blackboard, that have been introduced at Purdue Calumet in recent years.
Sharp said Osika's charge is to make sure the department balances the needs of technology with the needs of the users.
The importance of Osika's role was recognized recently when she was among 30 information technology professionals selected from colleges and universities worldwide to participate in a two-week program at the prestigious Frye Leadership Institute.
Frye Institute is sponsored by "Educause," the primary organization for academic information technology people.
Osika said her participation in the institute would help her better serve the university in her pivotal role between academic affairs and information technology.
