Graduation feature: English barrier doesn't stop Jordan native
Although he says he never thought he could do it because of language barriers, Fadi Abueledam is on schedule to earn a Purdue degree next week.
Abueledam, a bachelor's degree candidate in system analysis and design, expects to participate in Purdue University Calumet Commencement Exercises at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 21 at the Radisson Star Theatre in Merrillville.
Abueledam, 23, of Hammond, is a native of Jordan. He came to the U.S. as a high school student and graduated from Thornton High School in nearby Harvey, Ill. He began his Purdue Calumet studies in 1999.
"I was not that good in English," he said. "It took me a lot of time to speak it and write it."
Because of language and other differences, Abueledam said he thought he would spend only a couple of years in college and not be able to finish.
"It was a big change," he said. "I had to learn the language, people, behaviors and food."
His college career blossomed when he began taking computer courses.
"I like computers," he said. "I started with programming, but became better in systems analysis and design. I like projects and labs more than reading and exams."
For his senior design project, he created a website and database for the School City of Hammond's bi-lingual program.
He has supported his education with two scholarships by working in Purdue Calumet's Office of Financial Aid and Student Accounts since 2000.
"Purdue Calumet was good," he said. "I liked it a lot…"
As for his post-graduation plans, he has begun a job search and is considering pursuit of a master's degree in the computer field.
