Graduation feature: Mother of 4 to graduate with straight "A's" Dec. 21
Rosalva Robles, 24, says, "Everyone knows me as the student with four kids."
Well, raising four children has not kept her from maintaining straight "A's" as an accounting student at Purdue University Calumet.
The Hammond resident, who is completing her degree requirements in just three years, is scheduled to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting during Purdue Calumet's Commencement Exercises at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 21 at the Radisson Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville.
Robles credits her success in reaching her educational goals while fulfilling family responsibilities to her faith, help from family and determination.
"I thank God for everything," she said. "I pray for everything. If ever I have a problem, I thank Him because I learn from it. So whenever trouble comes, I pray."
She added, "I'm grateful for my parents. My mom has helped me out (in caring for the children)."
Robles has three daughters, ages 7, 6, and 7 months, and a 5-year-old son.
"I've had to sacrifice time away from my kids, but in the end it's for us-to give them a better life and provide for them," she said. "It's stressful, but I'm determined."
Robles also believes her hard work as a student has set a good example for her children.
"I think it pushes them to also want to learn," she said. "My children are really smart, honest, dependable and well-behaved."
Robles credits her Purdue Calumet instructors with inspiring her to learn.
"It amazes me how much these instructors know," she said. "I'm just really impressed with the knowledge of the professors and the quality of education they give; it is inspiring."
Robles' education has been supported by the Wanda Dudzik Scholarship, Hammond Centennial Scholarship and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. She also holds a part-time job.
Robles plans to continue her education by studying for a master's in business administration (MBA), sit for the certified public account (CPA) exam and eventually pursue a law degree.
"However long it takes me to achieve it, that is what I want to do," she said.
