Accounting grad is named vice president/chief financial officer (CFO) of American Savings

Scott Gyure

"At Purdue Calumet I was able to hold down a full time job, while simultaneously attending a high quality university."

Purdue University Calumet 1984 accounting graduate Scott Gyure recently was named vice president/chief financial officer (CFO) of American Savings, a northwest Indiana bank. Gyure is responsible for managing the bank’s growth and long-term profitability. The bank has branches in Munster, Hammond and Dyer.

After earning his bachelor’s degree from Purdue Calumet, he gained two graduate degrees in business administration from Indiana University Northwest in 1988 and 1989.

"Purdue University has an outstanding reputation that is recognized nationally," Gyure said. "The quality of the education that a person receives from this school is extremely strong and is recognized as such everywhere. Purdue Calumet has an enormous level of quality resources available and offers its students the opportunity to receive an excellent university level education."

Gyure brings to American Savings more than 20 years of banking experience at northwest Indiana-based Sand Ridge Bank.

"I look forward to new challenges with American Savings," Gyure said. "It’s a great organization, and I anticipate a long and prosperous relationship."

According to Gyure, he discovered his interest in accounting and banking as a young adult.

"When I was in my 20s, I was unhappily working in retail and a friend of mine said, ‘You are good at math. You should become an accountant.’ So I did," Gyure said. "After I graduated from Purdue Calumet I accepted a position at a bank, because I knew that banks required a large number of employees with accounting skills."

According to Gyure, working in his field while attending Purdue Calumet helped position him on the road to success.

"At Purdue Calumet I was able to hold down a full time job, while simultaneously attending a high quality university," he said. "Students who are employed at an organization that operates in a field that is similar to the one in which they are studying receive a huge intellectual benefit that they would not receive if they were not going to school and working at the same time."
