UNDERGRADUATE HANDBOOK

STUDENT REPRESENTATION ON SCHOOL OF NURSING COMMITTEES

Student representatives are valued members of nursing department committees. Student representatives, of the Undergraduate Nursing Program, serve on the following nursing department committees:

  1. Undergraduate Curriculum Committee - two students
  2. School of Nursing Curriculum Committee - one student
  3. Academic Support Committee - one student
  4. Faculty-Student Affairs Committee - one student

Nominations for student representatives for these committees will be requested at the beginning of the fall semester. Interested students should contact the Undergraduate Program Coordinator for additional information. Students are encouraged to participate and volunteer to serve on these committees. In the past, student representatives have made significant contributions/input to the School of Nursing regarding policies, procedures and curricula.

BULLETIN BOARD AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. Important information for undergraduate nursing students will be announced in nursing classes and posted on the undergraduate Nursing Bulletin Board.
  2. The Undergraduate Bulletin Board is located in the Gyte Annex, upper level across from X-138 and on the lower level, across from X-02.
  3. Students are responsible to check the Bulletin Board on a weekly basis for important information and announcements.

NURSING RESOURCE CENTER

The center houses the multimedia lab and nursing computer lab.

  1. The Center is located in Room X-70, in the lower level of the Gyte Annex.
  2. The Center is open from Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the Fall and Spring semester. The Center may be open some evenings. Hours are posted on the bulletin board next to the entrance door.
  3. Students must maintain an atmosphere conducive to study while in the Center. Group discussion of pertinent material is allowed if it can be done quietly without disturbing others.
  4. Ms. Carol Magliola, Director of the Resource Center, will provide needed materials and instruction on operating laboratory equipment. Equipment must be used in the laboratory or a designated room. All equipment that is not returned by the time and date due is subject to a late fee. Students will be held financially responsible for lost or broken equipment.
  5. A photocopy machine requiring a copy card is available for students’ use in the Resource Center.
  6. Graduate Assistants will supervise the Center during the posted hours and are available to assist students to operate computer programs.
  7. The Resource Center has an extensive software and multimedia library, which includes: word processing programs, statistical programs, clinical simulations, N-CLEX simulation test and programmed instruction in all nursing specialty areas. A complete list of multimedia programs is available in the Nursing Resource Center. Some of the multimedia programs will be required or recommended for use in nursing courses. Students are encouraged to take advantage of this excellent resource.
  8. Computer software programs cannot be checked out of the Center, but students may bring their own software into the Center for use on the computers. If the students use any personal software they must scan their disk for viruses prior to use and after use to prevent contamination from computer viruses.
  9. Students who wish to save their computer work on a disk must provide their own formatted disks.
  10. Policies for using the Nursing Resource Center can be found posted in the center.

COUNSELING CENTER

The University Counseling Center exists as a resource for students who need help in solving problems. Any of the Nursing Faculty will help students utilize this facility. The counseling center is located in Room G-5 and the extension is 2366.

SKILLS ASSESSMENT AND TUTORING CENTER

Tutorial Center

Tutoring in all subjects is available through the Skills Assessment and Development Center. This office is in the Gyte Annex, Room G-106 and the extension is 2504. For students having difficulty in any course, the faculty strongly urges the use of this support service.

SIGMA THETA TAU

Mu Omega Chapter

The Mu Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau was chartered in 1992. The purposes of Sigma Theta Tau are to:

  1. Recognize superior achievement.
  2. Recognize the development of leadership quantities.
  3. Foster high professional standards.
  4. Encourage creative work.
  5. Strengthen commitment to the ideals and purposes of the profession.

Minimum Qualifications for Membership:

  1. Minimum of 12 hours in nursing at the 300 level or higher.
  2. Rank in the upper 35% of graduating class with a minimum G.P.A. of 3.25.
  3. Letter of recommendation from a PUC faculty member.
  4. Letter of recommendation from a current member of the Nursing Honor Society at Purdue University Calumet.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Many of the area hospitals offer Nurse Extern and Nurse Fellowship Programs for students who have successfully completed one semester or more of clinical nursing courses. Advertisement for these programs will be posted on the Undergraduate Bulletin Board located in the Gyte Annex, upper level across from X-138 and on the lower level, across from X-02.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY CALUMET STUDENT HANDBOOK

Students are to refer to the Purdue University Calumet Student Handbook for explanation of University policies and student services. Policies such as grade appeal and registration can be found in this book. Copies are available in Lawshe, Room 352 or by calling the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Extension 2367 or at Purdue University Calumet Student Handbook. Students are accountable for information in this handbook.
