HEALTH AND SAFETY
return to faq topics
What will happen if my child becomes ill or hurt at school?
You will be contacted. If you cannot be reached emergency contacts will be called. In the event of an illness--a teacher will comfort your child and take notice of any signs or symptoms of illness. The teacher will complete an Illness Report to keep you up to date on your child's condition. In the event your child is injured at the child center we will administer first aid as appropriate and inform you of your child's injury in writing. Please see the parent handbook for more information on health and safety policies and procedures.
Can my child come to school if he or she is ill?
No. We do not provide sick care for children. Children need to be at home when they are contagious or recuperating from an illness. We reserve the right to send children home if they come to school ill. Please check the health section in the parent handbook for more information on health and absences.
How do I know if this is a safe place for my child?
Ask questions about health and safety practices at school. Observe the program in action. Check on the center's current licensing and accreditation status.
When do children go outdoors?
We try to go outside on a daily basis, weather permitting. There is a morning and afternoon outdoor time schedule for each classroom. We do not go outdoors in the winter if the temperature is below 25° F or above 90° F in the summer. We have a weather alert radio and pay close attention to wind chill factors, high ozone, heat index alerts and other weather related conditions when determining whether children play outdoors.
What security measures have you taken to ensure my child's safety in your program?
Several measures are in place. These measures include: security buzzer, security cameras on the roof of the building, direct access to campus police, campus security patrol, limited access to the building from the playground and lobby, and photo id check of all visitors (driver's license check). All employees have university photo id's. Practicum students have center approved name tags. Background checks are completed on center employees, practicum students, and volunteers. A weather alert radio system and emergency procedures and action plans are in place for handling emergency evacuations and drills. Please see the center director or refer to the parent handbook for more information on program safety.
