Student Research Award (SRA)
The Student Research Office has expanded the Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) Program to include both undergraduate and graduate students attending PUC. Up to ten awards of $300 each will be presented to students in recognition of their research efforts associated with Purdue University Calumet for the 2007/2008 academic year. The awards will be available for students in all fields of study, with at least one award going to a student in the schools of EMS, Education, LASS, Management, Nursing and Technology. USRA will be presented at the PUC Student Research Symposium to be held March 21st.
Eligibility: All PUC undergraduate students taking at least 12 credit hours and graduate students taking at least 6 credit hours during the academic year that the research was done are eligible for the award. The student could have worked on the research during the spring, summer or fall semesters of 2007 or spring 2008 semester. The student must have a PUC faculty or staff member as a mentor for the project. Several students may apply together for a group research project and share the award if the project is selected.
Judging Criteria: Research is defined as an endeavor pursued to discover or obtain new knowledge and help to expand the current state of understanding. The goal of a research project should be to discover new information, insight or view of a problem or situation and disseminate this knowledge to others, whether through a publication, presentation, competition, performance or other means. Therefore, the criteria for this award will be the student's ability to identify the goals for a research project, cite relevant references, carry out the research, cooperate with a PUC mentor, obtain a measurable result related to the goal and disseminate the information beyond the PUC community.
Nominations: Students can be nominated by any faculty, staff or student of PUC. Typically the nomination will be from the student's mentor. Nomination forms will be available from the Student Research Office website and accepted until February 29th. The students also have until February 29th to submit their application and research paper. A committee co-chaired by Drs. Joe Bularzik and Catherine Gillotti will review the materials and announce the recipients at the Research Symposium, where the recipients will give a short presentation on their work.
Please inform students working with you this year or last spring and summer semesters about the awards as an incentive for continued good work. More information about the nomination and submission process, along with the paper format and judging criteria will be available on the website www.calumet.purdue.edu/studentresearch.
