Proofreading is only one part of making sure that what you write is what you mean. While it is important to proofread your paper, our goal is to help you learn how to do this yourself.
In order for us to help you correct your paper, you need to be here in person so that we can talk about your writing. Remember, our goal is to help you become a better writer.
Bring the work youve done so far, a copy of the assignment or your notes on the assignment, and any instructor or peer comments that you may have. If you haven’t started writing yet, bring your questions and concerns about the assignment and have a discussion with a tutor about how to start your paper.
If you are required to come in for tutoring, then you need to come in ready to work for the full 45 minute session. Anything less may not count toward fulfilling the requirement
Just bring in a copy of the assignment, and well help you identify what your instructor wants you to do. We can help you at any stage of the writing process, from understanding the assignment to editing and documentation style.
Tutors are not permitted to write on the students work, but you are welcome to mark up your paper however you think will be helpful. We can put notes, observations, or suggestions on a separate sheet of paper for you.
In order to guarantee a tutoring session, especially when assignments are due, we strongly suggest you make an appointment. If you are unable to make an appointment, we take walk-ins on a first-come-first-served basis.
You can walk-in as often as you like and wait until a tutor is available, or you can schedule a maximum of two appointments a week. This includes face-to-face, asynchronous, and synchronous tutorials.
Tutors are not the graders of your paper. Their work is to help student writers sort through responses. They can guide, support, and encourage writers, but they should never evaluate a piece of writing or speculate about what grade the paper might earn.
You will need to come into the WC, in person, anytime during the semester for the three 30-minute sessions required for the first-year writing classes. Online sessions reinforce rather than replace required sessions.
